Neighborhood garden members meet to decide who will plant what foods and how much of each variety to plant. Other neighbors agree to plow the dirt, water the crops, or defend the garden from animals who may try to nibble the plants. Once everyone has a job to do, the planting begins.

Also, at the first neighborhood garden meeting, members must discuss and decide how the produce will be divided between everyone fairly. Some groups choose to pick only what they plant themselves and then trade off with others. Some groups decide to evenly split the total crops every time a crop is picked. Other groups assign one day of the week for a set number of people to pick from the garden.

Some foods that work well for community gardens are tomatoes, potatoes, corn, peppers, butter beans, string beans, and cucumbers. Some gardeners even plant cantaloupes, watermelons, and strawberries. A few growers even grow beautiful flowers or small plants for members to dig up and plant at their own homes.

Since tending the garden and watering the plants can take time, neighbors get to know one another as they grow their own food. In this way, neighborhood garden bring people together to form close communities. The gardens even give the neighborhood kids jobs to do. Another advantage of these gardens is the money that growers save on their grocery bills during the gardening season. No matter what members decide to grow or how they choose to divide it, these neighborhood gardens make a lot of sense.

However another thing that needs to be done yearly is to re soil the garden this means going to the local gardening shop and purchasing some new top soil. The reason to do this is so that the nutrients can be restored to a garden before the next planting season.

A third thing to help a garden grow better is during the fall when all the leaves are falling off the tree put them leaves to use in the garden. The leaves can act as a great moisture holder for the garden. The first thing to do is remove about 4-6 inches of the soil and then layer the leaves in not to thick or it will hurt the garden. After putting the layer of leaves in then take the soil and replace it back on top of the leaves. This is a great tip for people that live in a drier climate that don’t get a lot of rain and don’t want to water every day.

A fourth tip for adding more nutrients to the garden would work best for people that have dogs. What you do is take the dog waist and also add this into the garden on the top the key is to not add too much in one spot but if spread out equally this can provide some great fertilizer to the garden and it is cheap and safe.

Eggs underneath the leaves of the cauliflower plant are sign of imported cabbage worms or Harlequin bugs. Harlequin bugs are found mainly in the warm southern climates of North America. Imported cabbage worms are problematic in all the North American regions. After hatching, the worms migrate to the center of the cauliflower and eat the head of the vegetable. They also leave a residue that renders the plant inedible. Remove any infected leaves and cover the plants with sheer row covers to control the worms.

Slugs are another common problem in many vegetable gardens. The slimy gastropods are infamous for destroying cauliflower crops by eating the leaves from the vegetable. The slime they leave behind can also destroy a cauliflower plant. Many gardeners have come up with their own way to prevent slugs from eating their vegetables. One of the more popular means is setting out dishes of beer around their garden. The slugs are drawn to the bowls of beer. When the slugs enter the dish of beer, they become trapped and drown. Other gardeners have implemented drip systems into their garden to eliminate excess moisture which slugs are drawn to. Reducing the amount of organic compost used around cauliflower plants may also reduce the risk of a slug infestation.
